The IRFZ44NPBF (Z44) is a widely-used N-Channel Power MOSFET known for its high-speed switching capabilities and low on-resistance. Housed in a durable TO-220 package, it is specifically designed to handle heavy loads while maintaining high efficiency, making it a staple in both industrial and hobbyist electronics. Read more
The IRFZ44NPBF (Z44N) N-Channel Power MOSFET is one of the most popular and versatile components in the electronics world. At Electrapac, we consider this a "bench staple"—it is the go-to choice for high-speed switching and pulse-width modulation (PWM) tasks due to its exceptionally low "on-resistance" and high current handling.
The IRFZ44N utilizes advanced processing technology to achieve extremely low resistance per silicon area.
Ultra-Low On-Resistance: At only 17.5mΩ, this MOSFET wastes very little power as heat, allowing for smaller heatsinks and more efficient designs.
Fast Switching: Optimized for high-frequency PWM applications, such as motor speed controllers and DC-DC converters.
Ruggedness: The "N" series is designed for "Advanced Process Technology," providing high dv/dt ruggedness (the ability to handle rapid voltage changes without failing).
Easy to Drive: Compatible with most standard 10V–12V gate driver circuits and microcontrollers (when used with a driver or transistor stage).
Industry Standard TO-220: Fits perfectly into breadboards, perf-boards, and standard heatsinks.
To get the best performance for your Electrapac project, keep these tips in mind:
Gate Drive Voltage: While the threshold is 2V–4V, you should provide 10V to 12V to the Gate to fully "open" the MOSFET. Driving it directly from a 5V Arduino pin may cause it to stay in the linear region and overheat if the current is high.
Heat Dissipation: Even though it is efficient, switching 41A will generate heat. Always use an aluminum heatsink for loads exceeding 5A.
Flyback Protection: If you are controlling an inductive load (like a motor or solenoid), always place a Flyback Diode (like an 1N4007 or 1N5819) across the load to protect the MOSFET from voltage spikes.
Static Safety: MOSFETs are sensitive to static electricity.
DC Motor Speed Controllers: Perfect for PWM control in RC cars, robotics, and e-scooters.
Solonoid & Relay Drivers: Switching high-current mechanical parts from a low-power microcontroller.
LED Dimming: Controlling high-power LED strips and arrays.
Inverters: A core component in DIY DC-to-AC power inverters.
Battery Protection Circuits: Acting as a high-speed electronic switch for battery management systems.
