This USB Female Type A DIP Connector is the standard interface for adding USB connectivity to your custom PCB projects or repairing existing hardware. Designed for through-hole (DIP) mounting, it provides a sturdy and reliable physical connection for power and data. Read more
The USB Type-A Female DIP Connector is the standard interface for "host" devices. It is designed to be soldered directly onto a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and allows you to plug in standard USB flash drives, keyboards, and mice.
The "DIP" (Dual In-line Package) or "Through-Hole" designation means it has pins that pass through the PCB, providing a strong mechanical bond—essential for a port that will endure frequent plugging and unplugging.
Since this is a USB 2.0 connector, it features four main pins. When looking at the front of the connector with the plastic "tongue" on top:
VCC (+5V): Power supply.
D-: Data Negative.
D+: Data Positive.
GND: Ground.
Shielding: The outer metal casing usually has two large tabs that solder into the PCB for structural grounding and durability.
Mechanical Strength: Unlike Surface Mount (SMD) connectors which can be ripped off the board easily, the through-hole pins and mounting tabs make this very rugged.
Right-Angle Design: Most DIP connectors are "Right-Angle," meaning the USB port faces the edge of the board while the pins sit vertically.
Standard 2.0 Speed: Supports data transfer rates up to 480 Mbps.
Universal Compatibility: Fits any standard USB Type-A male cable or device.
DIY Projects: Adding a USB port to an Arduino or ESP32 project to power external peripherals.
Power Banks: Used as the output port for charging smartphones.
Custom Keyboards: Mounting the host port on a custom mechanical keyboard PCB.
Repair: Replacing broken USB ports on laptops, routers, or gaming consoles.
Because the outer metal shield acts as a large heat sink, it can be difficult to get the solder to flow smoothly on the two large mounting tabs. It is best to use a higher temperature setting on your soldering iron or a larger "chisel" tip for those specific points to ensure a solid mechanical connection.
