The MQ-5 Gas Sensor Module is a high-sensitivity specialized detector designed for the detection of Natural Gas and Methane (CH_4). At Electrapac, we recommend this sensor specifically for kitchen safety systems, industrial boiler monitoring, and gas leak detection in environments where LPG or pipe-line natural gas is the primary fuel source.
The MQ-5 is a Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) sensor.
Methane Optimized: Unlike the MQ-2 (which is a generalist), the MQ-5 is fine-tuned to detect Natural Gas even in the presence of other background gases.
Dual Output Flexibility: * Analog Output (AO): Connect to an Arduino ADC pin to see the exact ppm (parts per million) concentration.
Digital Output (DO): Use the onboard potentiometer to set a threshold and trigger an alarm directly.
Fast Recovery: Once the gas clears, the sensor rapidly returns to its baseline state, reducing false alarms during long-term monitoring.
Integrated LM393: The module includes a high-precision voltage comparator, ensuring the digital output is clean and free of "jitter" or noise.
Status LEDs: Includes a Red power LED and a Green signal LED that lights up when the gas threshold is exceeded.
The Electrapac MQ-5 module is designed for easy 4-pin connection:
VCC: Connect to 5V (Stable power is required for the internal heating coil).
GND: Connect to common ground.
DO: Digital Output—triggers a LOW signal when gas is detected.
AO: Analog Output—provides a voltage between 0V and 5V proportional to gas density.
Pro-Tip: The MQ-5 runs warm! The internal heater is necessary for the chemical reaction to occur. If the sensor is cold, it will not provide accurate data. Always allow the sensor to "preheat" for at least 60 seconds after powering it on before reading the data.
Kitchen Safety: Detecting leaks in Titas Gas or LPG cylinders to prevent domestic accidents.
Industrial Safety: Monitoring methane levels in mines, refineries, or sewage treatment plants.
Gas Leak Alarms: Building a DIY smart home alert system that sends a notification to your phone.
Combustible Gas Detectors: Portable handheld devices for gas technicians and plumbers.
Greenhouse Monitoring: Tracking methane levels in organic composting or bio-gas energy projects.
