The TCRT5000 Reflective Optical Sensor is a high-precision infrared sensor designed for line tracking and proximity detection. It features a built-in infrared emitter and a phototransistor that detects reflected IR light. This sensor is widely used in Line Follower Robots, DIY smart cars, and paper-sensing in printers. Encased in a durable plastic housing, it provides reliable performance by distinguishing between reflective (white) and non-reflective (black) surfaces. It is fully compatible with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and other microcontrollers for hobbyist and industrial applications. Read more

The TCRT5000 is a specialized reflective sensor that combines an infrared (IR) emitting diode and an NPN phototransistor in a single leaded package. It is designed to detect the presence of an object or the transition between reflective and non-reflective surfaces (such as a black line on a white floor). Its integrated construction blocks visible light, ensuring high accuracy in varied lighting conditions.

Key Features

  • Focused Detection: The sensor uses a physical "blocker" construction to ensure the phototransistor only picks up IR light reflected from an object directly in front of it.
  • Daylight Filter: The phototransistor is coated with a daylight filter to prevent interference from ambient indoor lighting.
  • Dual-Purpose Functionality: Highly effective as both a proximity sensor (detecting an object) and a line tracker (detecting color contrast).
  • Compact & Durable: Small footprint makes it easy to mount on robot undersides or within tight mechanical assemblies.
Internal Structure & Working Principle

The TCRT5000 works on the principle of IR reflection. The IR LED continuously emits infrared light.

  1. Reflective Surface (White/Light): Most of the IR light reflects back into the phototransistor, allowing current to flow (Logic LOW in most modules).
  2. Absorptive Surface (Black/Dark): The black surface absorbs the IR light; very little reflects back, keeping the phototransistor in an "off" state (Logic HIGH in most modules).
Common Applications
  • Line Following Robots: The standard sensor for detecting black tracks on white surfaces.
  • Rotary Encoders: Used with a "striped" disk to measure motor speed (RPM).
  • Paper Sensors: Found in printers and fax machines to detect paper presence or edge.
  • Limit Switches: Used in CNC machines or 3D printers as a non-contact end-stop.
Wiring & Module Comparison

While the TCRT5000 is a standalone component, it is often sold on a small PCB module which includes:

  • VCC: 3.3V - 5V.
  • GND: Ground.
  • DO (Digital Output): High/Low signal based on a threshold set by an onboard potentiometer.
  • AO (Analog Output): Direct voltage reading based on the amount of reflected light (more precise for varying distances).

Pro Tip: When building a line follower, mount the sensor approximately 3mm to 5mm above the ground for the best contrast detection. If the sensor is too high, the IR light scatters; if it is too low, the reflection is too intense to distinguish colors.
